Policies are operational guidelines for a Council or Conference. The purpose of a policy is to protect and steer members, staff, and board members as they fulfill the mission of the organization. Policies define or clarify appropriate actions in complicated or challenging situations. A well-written policy can streamline administration or help your Council or Conference deal with potential or actual conflicts.
The primary policies for the Society are the Rule and the Bylaws. This page contains samples of some common policies which you might find useful. The policies shown here are not meant to be adopted as is but rather serve as examples of how such a policy could read. Before adopting any policy, local legal advice should be sought to assure that the wording is in compliance with your state’s laws and your area’s ordinances.
For more information on writing and adopting policies, see “Introduction to Governance Policies” in this list.
