Q: Is there a National SVdP rule that new Conference members who have completed the Ozanam Orientation must be accompanied by an established member on every home visit made for six months?

A:  This is not a national requirement; however, what you describe is a local definition. Councils/Conferences throughout the country probably have their own restrictions on home visit training.

Q: We have a member who does a lot of travel as a representative for national. Does the Conference record these miles on the national annual report?

A:  Typically, mileage counted is for home visits and other works being done in the immediate area. However, it won’t hurt to include members travelling as national representatives in the same place as mileage for home visits and other Society work on the Conference annual report.

If the new member is not accompanied by an established member the new member will be visiting with another new member. I cannot imagine two new Vincentians wanting to go on a home visit by themselves–that is like the proverbial “blind leading the blind.” Does the person writing the question belong to a conference that allows one person to do a home visit? It would be interesting to know the “back story” behind this question. Rule, no. But why would new members want to visit by themselves?

Hi Cindy, and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Home Visit training includes an introduction during the Ozanam Orientation and a Home Visit Workshop which local Councils are expected to offer, but the primary Home Visit training happens in the Conference. That’s why it’s so important for the Conference to have its own guidelines for this training. I assume the six month period for accompanied Home Visits is the local guideline for the original questioner. That seems a bit long to me, but I don’t know the circumstances or community of that Conference, and I assume they have their reasons, but going on your first (or first few) visits with a more experienced member is part of the national guidelines, which you can find here:

Even when i was a founding member of a Conference some years back, we had members of a neighboring Conference accompany us on our first visits. How you determine when a member is experienced enough to no longer need that mentor is a Conference determination, though!

Had the same thought – visits are always made in 2’s for support, safety, and clarity.
New members accompanied by experienced ones.

Yes, new members really should have a more experienced mentor – not only for Home Visits, but throughout their discernment as new members!
